I highly recommend the novel "Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl," a remarkable and inspirational work. Ever since I began high school, stories about Jewish history and culture have intriguied me. Although she lived 65 years ago, the thoughts and feelings of Anne Frank are still relevant and experienced by teenagers and adults today. Like Anne Frank, many teenagers feel as though they are too controlled by their families and desire greater independence. For example, Anne Frank remarks, "...when you're as old as we are, you do want to decide just a few things for yourself, you want to be independent sometimes" (Frank, 178). This book covers Anne Frank's life from her thirteenth birthday in 1942 until her family's tragic arrest by the Gestapo in 1944. From June 1942 to August 1944, the Franks, along with five other people, were forced to hide in a room known as the Secret Annexe inside a warehouse in Amsterdam, Holland.During this time, Jewish people throughout Europe were forced to escape from the Nazis, who attempted to systematically persecute and destroy Europe's Jewish population. Ultimately, the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews, 2/3 of the world's Jewish population. After fleeing Nazi persecution in Germany, the Frank family lived a peaceful life in the Netherlands until the 1941 Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Fortunately, they were able to be hidden by courageous non-Jewish Dutch friends who had previously worked with Mr. Frank. Eventually, the families in hiding were arrested and sent to concentration camps where all perished except for Anne Frank's father, Otto. After the war, Otto Frank was given Anne's diary by two former office helpers. Due to the hardship of living in a cramped hiding place, Anne learned to try her hardest not to argue with the other residents of the Secret Annexe and instead expressed herself in a diary. As many people begin to do when they are teenagers, Anne thought deeply about life, current situations (the war and being in hiding), values and the kind of person she wanted to be as an adult. Anne truly desired to become her own person as she related in her diary, "I...keep trying to find a way of becoming what I would so like to be..." (Frank 267-268).
“Number the Stars” by Louis Lowry is an excellent story of the heroism and struggle during World War II of those who helped the Danish Jews to freedom in Sweden. While the story itself is fictional, it is based on true events and serves to illustrate many of the things that the real Danish Resistance and the real Danish Jews faced. It is well written and the plot and premise will keep the reader interested to the very end, while giving one much to reflect on.
i feel everyone should read the greatet book ever written. The bible. It is a wonderfull book that tells of a wonderfull future as well as historicaly accurate accounts of long gone civilizations. Read it then tell me what you think.
A book I strongly recommend is "Of Mice And Men". The book shows the dark side of human reality and the struggle of life. The main character is put in situations where he decides if he wants to make his life better or watch out for his brother like friend who is always making his life worse.
I, like most, am not a very focused reader. I hardly even get passed the first chapter without being utterly bored. knowing this about myself, I choose not to read as often as I should. Although, there is one book unparticular that pulled on my curiosity, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.I read this book for my freshman year in highschool and it was fantastic. This novel is quite exquisite, but it is slightly hard to follow. Wilde is an extremely talented writter. He BRings the story to life through his details and incredible, realistic dialogue. The book can be quite strong and the dialect is very intelligent and difficult to understand at times. The twists in the plot keep the reader sitting on the edge of their seat. Well of course if your standing, it's a different situation. This novel has so many interesting emotions running althrough out it! I just can't describe it! It made me think at every turn, I was always interested! Well, you know, after the boring introduction that was slightly confusing, but hey, What book doesn't have them?! You willl absolutely adore this read! So much so that i keep making spelling errors! Willl, seriously... anyway, The Picture of Dorian Gray byy Oscar Wilde will intrigue your miind!
I recommend that people read the book called "The Notebook", by Nicolas Sparks. The book is based on a young couple named Ali and Noah who met and fell in love, but were from two completely different worlds and backgrounds. Ali was educated and wealthy, and Noah had little education and money. No matter what gets between them, their love always grew stronger. This book is both romantic and sad, but also has some humor.
"Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board"
This book is about Bethany Hamilton, a teenage girl who lost her left arm during a shark attack. She was surfing on the coast of Kauai, Hawaii, when a shark came out of nowhere and ripped her arm out (true story). She was taken to a hospital, were her dad was supposed to have knee surgery done, but instead Bethany toke his place in the operating room. The 15ft tiger shark was caught the next day with her arm inside it: but it was too late to reattach it to her shoulder. She lost an estimated 60% of her blood, and if the shark had bitten her two inches further in, the attack would have been fatal. She spent a week at the hospital, and less than a month later, she went back in the water to surf again without her arm. Her attack was spread all over the news around the world. I heard about Bethany in the news and possibly read an article about her in a sports magazine , but until my 8th grade teacher had me read the book, I never ready understood the ordeal from her side of the story. I never understood the pain from her injury she had to deal with, and the impact it cause on her and her family. My mom didn't understand why she went surfing again, but I do. She loves surfing; it's her life. She would never give it up just because she only has one arm. Of course, she had taken a while to practice paddling and balancing on the board with only one arm, but she was able to concur that too, and began surfing competitively again. This book also tells about her life before the accident, and the fame she gained after she went back in the water. The main moral is to follow your dreams no matter what the circumstances, or condition. I have already recommended this book to some people, and now I recommend it to you (yes, you too LB)
(Read it BEFORE you see the movie, and don't go watch it and say that you read the book without actually reading it)
I feel that everyone should read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. It is a wonderful story that contains relatively easy vocabulary but is by no means an easy read. It is a very enjoyable tale that includes every interesting aspect of a book that anyone could ask for: action, adventure, mystery, the development of the underdog into the prominent character, etc. Each obstacle that the protagonist encounters is beautifully constructed and described. The resolution is heartwarming and many morals and lessons can be learned from reading it.
