This week we are reviewing sentence types. Please review the information below and then write one of each type.
Sentence Types
Structurally, English sentences can be classified four different ways, though there are endless constructions of each. The classifications are based on the number of independent and dependent clauses a sentence contains. An independent clause forms a complete sentence on its own, while a dependent clause needs another clause to make a complete sentence. By learning these types, writers can add complexity and variation to their sentences.
Simple sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and no dependent clauses.

Compound Sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses but no dependent clauses.

The clown frightened the little girl, and she ran off screaming.

Complex Sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

Complex-Compound Sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

My dog saw the toy, and he got excited to play.

Simple Sentence:
Nick started a coin collection.
Compound Sentence:
Nick started a coin collection, and his older brother bought an album of rare stamps.
Complex Sentence:
As soon as Nick started a coin collection, his brother bought an album of rare stamps.
Compound-Complex Sentence:
As soon as Nick started a coin collection, his brother bought an album of rare stamps; on Christmas morning they exchanged coins and stamps.
Emily C. Sentence Types
1. Simple Sentence: My dog, a whippet, runs with blinding speed.
2. Compound Sentence: King George had a terrible stutter, but it was fixed with speech therapy.
3. Complex Sentence: Although the Navajo were given a large amount of land by the U.S. government, many Navajos are still poor since their land isn't productive.
4. Complex-Compound Sentence: Although Asher Lev had a passion for drawing, his community was offended by his paintings and Lev was exiled to France.
simple- I enjoyed eating with you.
compound- I ran five miles, and then i passed out.
complex- After i cleaned my room, I descovered that I through out my homework.
complex-compound-Despite saving up the money,and getting my liscense, my parents are still vascilating about letting me get a car.
simple: My sister enjoys playing volleyball.
compound: A stranger started talking to me, and i quietly walked away.
complex: The museum was very crowded, because they were having an art show.
complex-compound: His job was on the line, Travis couldn't afford to get fired, he did everything he could to make his boss happy, he did so well that he ended up getting a raise.

1. Simple Sentence: I love to read books.
2. Compound Sentence: When I was little, I didn’t like to read chapter books.
3. Complex Sentence: Now that I’m older, I’ve learned to love reading a good chapter book.
4. Complex-Compound Sentence: Sometimes at night, when I’m reading, I’ll fall asleep, and dream about the book I’m reading.
Tom deleted his Facebook account.
Tom deleted his Facebook account, and was never heard from since.
During the deleting process of his Facebook, tom hesitated to press the "confirm" button.
Tom didn't think Facebook was for him, and he rarely went on it, so he decided to delete it.
Simple Sentence:
The student studied chemistry.
Compound Sentence:
The student studied about chemistry and he learned about chemical formulas.
Complex sentence:
After the student learned how to write chemical formulas, he could balance a chemical equation.
Compound-Complex Sentence:
After the student could balance chemical equations, and because he also knew element symbols, he was able to predict the products for a mixture of chemicals.
